Fundamental Phonetic and Phonological Features of Ixcatlán Mazatec Tones

Abstract

This paper describes the phonetic factors influencing the manifestation of tones in Ixcatlán Mazatec (MZI), with a focus on the analysis of tonal declination and the raising effect of glottal consonants, in addition to the tonal phonological processes previously proposed by Wagner Oviedo (2018). Furthermore, some prosodic processes affecting the tones of MZI will be briefly discussed.
