Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the scientific research’s discourse as basically descriptive and explicative, from an analysis of the nominal function in the Spanish verb ser. On the one hand, this verb allows refer to, by taxonomic categories; and, on the other hand, it allows expand to, by argumental sequences, whose modes of meaning may differentiate the discourse’s organization forms. In the scientific research’s papers, ser as a nominal verb constitutes the most appropriate and efficient way to naming the implicated phenomena, events, objects, situations and processes involved in the scientific labor’s development. Since the scientific research’s discourse is intended to defining, delimiting, determining, constituting and characterizing events and objects to give permanence and stability, it is explicable the presence of plentiful nominal structures with verb ser. This study was based on six scientific research papers from Mexico in the areas of mathematics, engineering, health, geology, chemistry and biology. These papers were selected from the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología’s catalog of scientific research journals.
