Strategies of relativization in Mazahua
Abstract
In this article, the structure of restrictive relative clauses in Mazahua is described. Three relativization strategies have been identified. These strategies are a gap, subordinator and non-reduction. In this Otomanguean language, the grammatical relations (subject, direct object, indirect object, double object), have accessibility to relativization. The adjuncts (locative, comitative, instrumental) can occur with relative clauses. Mazahua does not have relative pronouns; the strategy of articles, demonstratives and locatives is used for relativization. In free relative clauses appear a great number of relative pronouns. These relative pronouns co-occur freely. In this language the modifications are generated through concepts of property that are expressed in relative clauses.Downloads
