Abstract

The investigation explained in this note focuses on the study of general phonological features and on the morphosyntax of Tamazulápam Mixe (mtm), a language spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico, which belongs to the South Highland Mixe variety of the Mixe-Zoquean Family (Wichmann, 1995). The analysis is based on a corpus obtained from a 19-hour transcription of spontaneous speech, which has allowed me to describe the language’s phonology and morphosyntax. I can highlight the presence of iambic accent and two grammaticalization processes: morphological inverse reanalysis -jë as an applicative, and applicative -jay as a morphological inverse. Furthermore, I study the three grammaticalization stages of comitative adposition as a relational preverb and, finally, as a comitative applicative.
