Abstract

The uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) caused an unprecedented volume of information as well as debated opinions in the Mexican press. Starting with a discursive analysis of the articles published during the month of January, 1994, about two fundamental notions, violence and poverty, we attempted to separate the two discursive universes in which supporters both of the government and the opposition move, and to demonstrate how in this battle of meaning one doxa gains advantage, “poverty leads to violence”, a value shared by one part of mexican society, and which Salinas’ arguments never managed to overcome.
