Abstract

In the everyday family and community life of a Peruvian Andean town, as well as in everyday routines carried out in the local school, community members participate in social practices and values that relate to both their indigenous cultural heritage and a national urban tradition. The presence of these two distinct social and cultural traditions and corresponding expectations are often conceived in terms of contradiction and conflict. However, this article indicates how community members’ everyday experiences associated with these traditions tends to produce a coexistence of meaning systems and practices. Because teachers share the same cultural and linguistic background as their students, the school similarly manifests openness to the students’ local world, allowing for coexistence of practices and expectations in school settings as well as in family and community life.
