Abstract

This paper argues that silence has a meaning within language. This reflection is made because philosophers and linguists pay little attention to this issue and its proposed revaluation. Here, the History of Philosophy is reviewed to try to get to the bottom of what was thought and argued by some ancient philosophers, directly or indirectly, about the silence and its meanings. We focus in the contemporary era, in Martin Heidegger and Ludwig Wittgenstein, who made reflections on the subject. We hold that silence is a source of human communication; we propose a language of silence, which must have a serious analysis.
