Abstract
This paper analyses the linguistic strategy called nomination as a form of representing social actors in the media discourse in Mexican press. By documenting the events of March 28th, 2001, where an indigenous group, from different ethnic backgrounds, had an unprecedented participation in the Mexican Congress, we hope to explain the mediatic reaction of the event that has been described as historic for the indigenous movement in Mexico. We analyze different Mexican newspapers: La Jornada, El Universal and Reforma, of the following day to find evidence of how the press constructed through nomination a hyperreal figure that influenced public opinion.Downloads
