Abstract

This diachronic study presents new evidence in favor of the hypothesis that the 19th century marks the beginning of a new period in the historical development of Spanish. The change it centers upon consists in a grammaticalization process which led to the rigidification of SV word order in all types of clauses, after hundreds of years of rampant variation, motivated by the higher sensibility the language used to show to pragmatic and/or semantic factors.
