Abstract

In this paper, the way Spanish verbs are incorporated in Tarascan is analyzed. It is shown that though at present time —contrary to Moravcsik‘s universal proposal— these forms do not contain a verbalizer suffix, evidence suggests that verbal borrowings took such suffix in the past time. In order to support this statement, I claim that, as a result of morpho–phonological changes that produced the verbalizer’s disappearance, it took place a reanalysis of foreign forms that lead to the establishment of a specific process for the incorporation of Spanish verbs.
